Coffee Tin Turned Into Nautical Vase

Hi, friends!!

Before I say anything I have to apologize because this month I’m late to one of my favorite events, that is our Int’l Bloggers Club Challenge! As you already may know I moved last week and it’s been crazy up to the point not knowing which day I live. Anyway, if you are new to my blog you won’t know what it is this about so let me explain.  A group of bloggers around the world are sharing their crafts, traditions and how’s life in different parts of the planet. Last month we talked about Outdoors Projects and the previous one was Epic Hits and Fails. This month is a cool one because we’ll be sharing Repurposed Tins… who else have lots and lots of tins at home? Then don’t miss what my friends have to share too.

I should start this post saying: “Hi, my name is Pili and I have an addiction. I’m addicted to empty jars and tins (among many other things)” . That means that I can’t just throw them away when they are empty because I wait for the inspiration one day. That day hasn’t arrived yet to use them all but you should have seen my husband’s face when he had to carry all the boxes… he didn’t find it as funny as me.

Another problem is that not only I have my own tins but people offer me theirs. A lady who follows me on Facebook contacted me once to tell me she was working on a coffee shop and she had plenty of big coffee tins and she was sure I could give them some use. What do you think I said? Yes, of course!!

It looked like this

Isn’t it great? I planned to decoupage a napkin and make a vase out of it. In order to do so, I painted all white and the reason is that the napkin is so thin it shows what’s underneath it so with white you have the perfect surface. Two coats of my homemade chalk paint were enough. The picture below shows it with only one.

Then I picked a beautiful napkin I had. I love everything nautical.

The next step was removing the two white layers from the napkin as I only needed the printed one. That avoids the damn bubbles when dealing with napkins.

I used a brush and some water to tear the napkin in half. I prefer this way instead of cutting it with scissors because the borders are more easy to integrate and make them unnoticeable.

Another trick that works for me is at first “gluing” the napkin with just water, this way you get hardly any wrinkles.

Before it dried (because then the napkin would fell off) I applied some ModPodge to the whole thing.

It was time for some fun! I mixed white and blue roughly because I wanted to give the tin a cloudy sky effect.

I dabbed some paint and played with different shades of blue and white to reach that effect.

I did the same with yellow and brown for the bottom.

Ta da!! Done, one pretty nautical vase to be displayed.

It ended up being part of the built-in I made for one of the apartments I decorated. I will share the tutorial too so stay tuned.

I hope you enjoyed my coffee tin makeover, I will share soon a paper bin made with the coffee tin and napkins too.

Wow, PIli, wow. It looks like you painted the whole picture onto the coffee tin. Amazing and I learnt two incredibly valuable ModPodge tricks too. Love it

    • Pili says:

Thanks so much Michelle, the whole tin seems hand painted because of the texture of it, that’s the good thing about using napkins and paint at the same time.
Glad you found the tricks useful.

  2. Mary says:

Pili that is so, so pretty. I really learned a lot from this post. You know I have a love/hater relationship with decoupage. The tip about applying it with water and then before it dries to add the mod podge makes so much sense. Thanks for that. And painting all around the napkin that is such a smart idea too. It looks fantastic and I certainly would not have know it was just a napkin and then paint. You did an exceptional job. Can I start calling you :the Tin Lady” now?

    • Pili says:

I think all who have dealt with decoupage have that same feeling, but I can tell you those tricks make it much easier and you’ll feel not to throw the towel with it.
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, you made me laugh with the “tin lady” lol. Ask my hubby 😉

  3. Linda at Mixed Kreations says:

Wow Pili, it looks amazing! You did a great job, I had first thought that you had painted the picture on the tin. I will have to remember the tip about using water to stick the napkin on first then add mod podge.

    • Pili says:

Yes Linda, it is way easier to use water than glue or ModPodge because you don’t get so many wrinkles. It doesn’t mean the surface is completely flat but at least you don’t break the napkin so easily.

  4. Katrin says:

Pili you are the Queen of decoupage, it looks absolutely amazing! You did such an amazing job, I’m really loving this! And thank you so much for all of these amazing tricks you revealed, I had given up on decoupage because it just always looks horrible when I do it. I’d love to give it another go now. I also love the shape of the coffee tin, I would have taken them all as well, good for you!

    • Pili says:

You are making me blush Katrin! Whenever you feel it give decoupage another go with these tricks and you’ll see is not so frustrating. The lady told me some weeks ago she has more tins waiting for me, I guess it’s time to put on my thinking hat.

  5. Marie|The Interior Frugalista says:

Oh wow Pili, how beautiful is that coffee can now! I love how you continued the sky in the napkin and one would think at first glance that this was handpainted. Beautiful! I hope you took the completed coffee can back to the coffee shop to show them – I’m sure they’d be so pleased! Pinning and sharing 🙂

  6. Julie says:

wow, Pili this is brilliant. I love how you painted so the napkin edge just merges in, Such a clever idea. And a great tip about wetting the napkin before applying the glue. Thanks, I’ll remember that.

  7. Beverly says:

Pili, this is amazing! It looks absolutely wonderful! I’m always excited to see nautical and coastal makeovers. You did such a great job with this tin. I’m going to give this a try. Pinned.

  8. Keri says:

Pili, I love this coffee tin and how you’ve gave it a whole new look! Great tips on mod podging! I don’t do much decoupage these days but I’ll definitely keep your tutorial in mind when I do. I said it before and I’ll say it again, you did such an amazing job blending the napkin into the paint, just the perfect shading everywhere! I love how the vase looks on the built in!
