DIY Dog and Bunny Leash Holder

Hi guys!

It’s time for another Thrift Store Upcycle Challenge!! I’ve paired up with an amazing group of talented ladies to bring you a monthly thrift store challenge. Each month we will create a new home decor piece from an item(s) we’ve found at a thrift store, yard sale, resale shop etc. There is no budget or specific theme so we are free to let our creativity run wild!

I am working on my daughter’s bedroom and decided to make a trip to my local thrift store to see if I could find something I liked. I found a few things that would fit in there, and I also found this piece of wood.

I think it was part of a shelf, and I love scrap wood because it can be used for different projects so I bought it too because I had been thinking for a while to make a leash holder for our dog and bunny. No more looking for them around the house!

Here’s a list of what you need to make a leash holder.

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience in case you want to make your own. You can read my full disclosure here.

· Wood board
· 2 hooks
· 1 picture hanging mount
· Paint
· Brush
· Silhouette Cameo to design your own
· Stencils (you can find them here)
· Varnish

I started by painting the wood board with some milk paint leftover I had from another project I was working on.

With the first layer it doesn’t look too good, but always the second layer does the magic!

While the second layer was drying, I took a dog paw stencil I did some time ago and designed a new one for our bunny.

Then I took an old paint brush and some black acrylic paint, unloaded as much paint as I could in a paper plate and started stenciling. I didn’t secure the stencil because it was small and fast to do, but you can secure it to the wood with some painter’s tape if you want.

When the paw was dry, I did the same with the ears. I had some cabinet pulls from somewhere and decided to use them as hooks. The leashes are thin so the pulls should suffice.

I varnished them to protect from sun and rain, and hanged our new leash holder in our front door.

I know, same here, that’s why we decided it was time to make something for them. Now we get out of the house and take the leashes

Yes, I agree it would be a useful handmade Christmas gift! I guess everyone with pets would appreciate it

Thanks so much Katrin! We need organization around here… in fact we don’t need it, it is a must!

Now why didn’t I think of that? Famous last words huh? What ingenuity making board into leash holder and what a cute one. How sweet you have a bunny also.
We have five chickens and can leave our cat out in yard with them, never bothers them, is bit afraid of them actually. The chickens like to follow our black lab/border collie around back yard and they play on pallet piles.
    Enjoy lovely Fall weekend

We have friends who have chickens and I find them so interesting. They come close where we are to eat all the breadcrumbs and leftovers we have and are not too scared. Once I left my car doors open and one of them jumped in, I guess I needed to clean the car more often lol
Your pets must be good to leave the chickens alone

Hi Erlene! In fact we have two bunnies but one of them refuses to walk with a leash, so we only walk the other and the dog.
Thanks for the suggestion about the picture, I’ll do it

So cute! And a great idea. I am forever hanging our dogs leashes in different places and having to hunt for them! I have to admit, I had to do a double take at “Dog & Bunny” leashes!!

    • Pili says:

Maureen, I think all dog owners have to hunt for the leashes! I am so happy now I can’t understand how I lived without this all my life

    • Pili says:

In fact, the bunny is not too keen on his leash. He runs like crazy inside the home but as soon as we put the lash on to walk him on the street, he stops and lays down. My daughters just gave up haha

  3. Keri says:

Pili, this is too cute!!! What an awesome idea!! Love the cute little stencils on the wood. Now the leashes will never be lost, so smart.

    • Pili says:

This has been a life saver for us, it was a nightmare to look for Pinxo’s leash around the house.
