DIY Open Style Closet For Kids

Hi, my sweet friends!

I have some news for you… we moved last week. Yes, again. If you have ever moved then you know what it means, right? Boxes, and boxes and more boxes everywhere! But the house is great because it is an old townhouse with extra room at the rear perfect for my craft room and working space. I’m really excited!!

At the moment we are just unpacking and finding a place for all our stuff basically, and once we are settled we’ll make things pretty. We are in the stage I call “practical living”.

The first thing we decided to do was an open style closet for our daughters as their room didn’t have a proper wardrobe. The solution we found was fast, budget friendly and it was going to look nice so we didn’t think about it twice.

Each girl has a section and the clothes are hanging within their reach. Miss S still needs the help of the chair to reach the upper one but it won’t take long until she doesn’t need it anymore.

We are going to add a little dresser on the right for socks, underwear and little things they have. This way it will be easy to have them tidy and at sight.

We have a shoe storage on the floor level which is easier for all of us. They are barefoot almost all year round so they only need the shoes when we go out.

I feel a bit silly writing a tutorial about an open style closet because it is really easy. You don’t need special skills or tools, a drill and a screwdriver are enough.

First, we measured the desired height and length of the rod. Then we screwed the oval closet rod end supports to the shelf and we added a rod my husband found weeks ago next to a dumpster. Yes, you read it right, I converted him to my dumpster diving world!

We did the same on the wall, we drilled, added wall anchors and screwed in place. Done.

We repeated the process on the other side and it was completely done in less than one hour. If you are wondering why each shelf has a different color I will explain it. We already had the white one but I bought the wood one second hand for just 10€. They are from Ikea but I don’t think they carry the same model anymore, but here’s a similar version.

Remember what I said at the beginning? We’ll have time to paint the new one in white once we are more relaxed but for now it’s helpful as it is and the girls can find her clothes easily.

I do love Ikea hacks, I did an Ikea Lack coffee table hack some time ago.
