DIY Three Tiered Rolling Cart Out Of Free Finds

Hi, friends!!

It’s the last Monday of the month so that means it is time for another Int’l Bloggers Club Challenge! This is one of my favorite moments of the month because as you may know, a group of bloggers around the world are sharing their crafts, traditions and how’s life in different parts of the planet. Last month we talked about Epic Hits and Fails and the previous one was Spring Crafts. As we are slowly getting into summer we are going to share today some outdoor projects.

Today I am going to show you how you can make your own DIY three tiered rolling cart out of free finds. In fact, the title is not totally accurate as I bought the casters but they were the only things I had to buy.

Everything started when I found these two drawers sitting next to a dumpster.

I’m going to share what I used to make this DIY three tiered rolling cart and you’ll find some affiliate links for your convenience just in case you want to make your own version. You can check the full disclosure here.

Once I reached home I cleaned them with water and soap and used some wood putty to fill the holes from the missing hardware and other scratches.

I sanded everything to make it smooth and ready to paint. Then I went to my wood stash and find a leftover of what I used to make the decorative ladder and also a piece of white particle board.

I used some chalk paint from DecoArt, the color was the lovely blue Serene. I screwed some nails making sure they were totally inside the wood so I could use more wood putty to hide them.

I did the same to the bottom shelf which I decided to decoupage with some blue paper.

I did the same to attach the wood at the rear of the cart, and again to the other side.

It only had some caster wheels missing and finish the paint work but it sat abandoned for almost a year next to the old sewing cabinet. The Noah String Art was luckier and went to a new home 😉

Finally last month I decided it was time to finish most of the projects that were half done, and this rolling cart had its time.

I went to the upper terrace to add the caster wheels, finish with the paint and varnish it. It is now ready to be used as a rolling caddie for our dinner nights outdoors!!

Hubby took some wildflowers while he was walking the dog, you may have seen them on my Instagram account.

I took some empty jars and wrapped them with blue baker’s twine.

Pili I honestly don’t know what to say! I am so impressed with your wood working skills. When I first saw it I had no idea it was made from drawers, very impressive. I love that color too, it reminds me of the Mediterranean sky! Beautiful and so practical!

    • Pili says:

Thanks Mary, this one wasn’t very difficult to build. The paint is what makes a difference because you can’t see it’s made of scrap pieces.
Photos don’t make justice, the color is even prettier in real live.

  2. Michelle says:

That’s such a clever way to re-purpose two old drawers Pili and it’s so functional too. I love the way you created an extra shelf at the bottom and added the coasters. That color is gorgeous BTW, it really is serene.

    • Pili says:

It took me a while to come up with the idea of a rolling cart using the drawers, but I’m happy for that lightbulb moment because storage is always welcome.

  3. Katrin says:

I need you as my neighbour, but asap! I love this piece so much, I need it asap too! You are so clever and I just love how you grab some pieces of wood and make this fantastic piece out of it!

Don’t ask me to move to Cadiz because it’s too hot for me but you can move to Mallorca! I could do a lot of things for you because I keep finding free stuff all the time, that Marie Kondo would get mad if she came to my house lol. Thanks for the compliments, glad you like it!

  4. Jeannee says:

That turned out amazing! You did a bang up job on that piece! When I first saw it, I thought it was a finished piece that you painted but then I saw how Genius you were and that you built it from pieces! It looks so perfectly made I thought it was a commercial item! Very nice work. It’s beautiful!

  5. Linda at Mixed Kreations says:

How pretty Pili! What an amazing transformation from two curbside drawers. I love the color! I could use one of these for family barbeque ‘s. Thanks for sharing how you made it! I always have scrap wood.

  6. JoJo says:

Love it ! I think I would add a thin moulding all around the bottom shelf to keep things from falling off when I roll it around. Such a pretty Color !

  7. Keri says:

Pili, you are so creative!! Love how you repurposed the old drawers into this cart!! Amazing!! I also like the jars wrapped in bakers twine. This is an awesome idea!!

  8. Lisa says:

I love this idea. I have been wanting to get a serving cart for some time. My dining tables are small, so I never have enough room for my serving bowls and platters. It would never have occurred to me to make one with drawers. Thanks for a great DIY project.

  9. Leanna says:

These kind of carts are always so handy. They are great in a kids room, a bathroom, craft room, kitchen. What a terrific way to reuse some old drawers.

  10. Lauren says:

Your drawer/cart is amazing! Do you recall how many inches you spaced the drawers apart? I’d like to recreate something like this for my classroom.

    • Pili says:

      Hi Lauren

I measured it and there is a gap between the drawers of 22 cm. I am sure it will be very useful for your classroom and I’d love to see it finished! If you take a pic of it and use #mysweetthingsbypili_happy on social media I will see it 🙂

      Hugs!
