How To Get a Bright Look In Your Bedroom On a Budget

Updating a bedroom doesn’t mean to spend thousands on it, with some upcycle of what you have, some DIY and some thrift store shopping you can get a bright look in your bedroom on a budget.

Last year I was asked to decorate and furnish a city apartment so it was ready to rent by rooms. The budget for it was really low so I had to be creative, and I will share some tips on how I did it with you.

The first impression of the room was this. A huge black wardrobe was the first thing we could see when entering the room. Of course you don’t need to be a designer to know this is a no-no. The room was quite small, about 9.5m2 part of which was the little corridor at the entrance. And this was the biggest room of the apartment, you’ll see the smallest one!

Anyway, the first thing I had to plan was the needs of the people who would rent the room. They are not supposed to be renting long term but they would still need some storage space. This post may contain some affiliate links for your conveniene, you can read the disclosure here.

The iron headboard was already in the house so I just bought white spray paint and painted white. It really makes a difference in the room not having that big black monster.

Such a difference, right?

I found three black picture frames at the flea market and used some gray spray paint I had from previous projects to change them a bit and help them fit better with the new decor.

The gorgeous prints are from an artist on Creative Market. She has lots of different beautiful watercolor designs and you can combine them as you wish to make your own art.

I wrote the words “Live, Love, Laugh” below each design and printed on regular paper.

You may remember the little decoupaged sidetable. There’s no need to throw away furniture just because it looks outdated. With some paint, you can make wonders and still keep on the budget.

Ikea fans may recognize this Aneboda wardrobe but I didn’t want to leave it as plain as it is, so I used some pretty wallpaper to cover the plastic on the doors. The Ikea Rast drawer was painted white and the knobs were spray painted gray.

I did a cornice board with some scrap wood I had already at home to give the room a more sophisticated look. I promise I’ll share the tutorial soon because it’s really easy to do and it makes a difference in the room.

I found the cute basket at the flea market as well and painted a white star using a stencil I did.

If you take a look at the picture above you’ll notice there are two wall sockets. It was supposed to have the bed placed in that wall but then there was no place for the wardrobe and drawer. Architects!!

I’m a lover of stars but they are quite expensive to buy, so I did one for the room. If you want to make one (or more) too you can follow the tutorial I did some time ago in how to make faux metal stars.

Then you can add some details as this little tray made out of a picture frame.

A piece of scrap fabric, some fabric stiffener, and a stencil make a perfect bunting. Here I also used a piece of wood and foam with the same fabric to make a pinning board where they can hang pictures, notes…

White plain duvet covers also from Ikea, combined with pillows give the bed a classy look. You can buy the fabric and then sew yourself easy envelope pillow covers. If you don’t know how to sew you can ask some to do it for you, it’s fast and easy.

I really hope you enjoyed this room makeover and I inspired you to think outside the box when it comes to decorating.

Pili I love how you are working with a small space and yet you have made the room seem light and airy! We also have the same small rooms in our apartments. It is all the special touches that make it so homey and comfy. The wardrobe looks really nice with the paper too. Good idea to place the bed over there too, It’s good feng shui. Architects indeed!
