How to Make a Coat Rack From an Old Footboard

Hi, my sweet friends!!

Welcome to another Thrift Store Challenge! Yes, it is that time again when a group of bloggers teams up together to share our crafts and decor out of thrift store finds. Who said that making your house pretty means spend a lot of money on home decor? In fact, I really like DIYing the things I found on the curbside or at the thrift store the most. So these monthly series are great because I am also inspired by the creations of my fellow bloggers.

Thrift Store Decor Upcycle Challenge

The Rules:

  • Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
  • There’s no monthly theme.
  • There’s no budget to stick to.

Look at my find this month…

It’s a footboard!! Isn’t it pretty? I mean, it is not pretty right now but it’s pretty in spirit, you know what I mean.

The white lines are not only painted but carved in the wood.

The first time I saw it I had a light bulb moment, can you guess what I was thinking? If you said a bench then you are wrong 😉 I know you all know how much I love benches, like the romantic bench I did from some free finds, and the twin benches I did for a front beach apartment.

But this was a footboard which means it is shorter than a headboard so… what about a coat rack from an old footboard

Yeeessss!!

The first thing I did was get rid of the chunky round bottoms. I place it on my table saw and cut those babies out. I took a piece of scrap wood I had, cut to fit and add some screws at the back with my Kreg Jig. It makes my life so easy!

Then I decided to paint it white because it’s big, so this way it would look lighter wherever it was placed.

For that, I used Old Fashioned Milk Paint in Snow White. I love it because it’s a green paint and all you have to do is mix the same amount of paint with the same amount of water. I used the SafePaint version because I didn’t sand the footboard and I wasn’t looking for a big chippy look.

I did two coats front and back, letting dry between each of them. Seeing it white it looked so romantic that I thought a French flaire would be great.  Then I designed on Photoshop the text I wanted to transfer there.

You may think I did it wrong because it is backwards, but that’s the way you need to print the image if you want to transfer it to wood. In case you are wondering how it is done you can check my wood transfer tutorial.

While the transfer was drying I distressed the corners a bit to achieve some depth.

Here is it finished and in its all glory!

I got the hooks at the dollar store super cheap, so I spent almost nothing with this makeover. My favorite kind of makeover!

I didn’t plan to keep it but seeing it now I have serious doubts about selling it… if only I had enough place at home to keep everything I make!

Anything in French sounds romantic, do you agree?

The little heart is made with handmade dough and decoupaged a beautiful paper on it. In fact, it is the same I used for my hanging hearts.

I really love how it looks and how easy it was to transform an old footboard into a coat rack.

I hope you like it too! And don’t forget to visit what my friends came up with this month too!

It looks great Pili and really sweet in white with the lettering you chose. I´ve never transferred pictures or letters to wood, I´d love to give that a go!!

  2. Toni | Small Home Soul says:

Wow, unexpected and beautiful. I love that you used it for a coat rack, or a whatever cute thing you want to hang from it rack. I have two blank walls in my house that need something, but I’ve been holding out I think something like this might be perfect on one of the walls. Love it!!

You always come up with the best ideas. I think this is gorgeous and the hooks you found are perfect. I am going to have to start looking for headboards and footboards to repurpose! Nice job!

  4. Michelle says:

Now how did I miss this one Pili, it’s gorgeous. I would never be able to sell it. Nope, I’d probably redesign my whole house so I could keep it
