How to transfer on fabric in less than 5 minutes

Hi, my sweet friends!

I’ve been receiving questions about transfer into fabric since I posted my romantic pillow or lavender sachets and I thought that a picture is worth a thousand words, so I decided to make a little tutorial to show you how to do it, and maybe you decide to give it a try!

First a little explanation of the process.

1. We need acrylic spray varnish

2. Print the design you want mirrored, this is very important because if not it will be upside down. You need a laser printer, or you can take the file to a copy shop to print it for you.

3. Spray the design with varnish, at a distance of about 20 cm. This is to not saturate the paper but to have enough varnish for the ink to “get up”

4. You will know that you’ve done it right when you turn over the sheet and you are able to see the image.

5. Press with the back of a spoon when still wet to help ink transfer well. Here Miss A was helping me 😉

6. Remove the sheet and you’re done!!How to transfer on fabric in less than 5 minutes

Now I recommend you to iron the fabric as the heat helps to fix the ink.

I hope you find this tutorial useful and decide to try it… Remember, I would love to see what you’ve done! If you want to see more projects and tutorials, you can see them galleryon this gallery.

Happy Friday!

Hugs,

Hi Sandy. You can do two things to prevent fading: 1. Iron the fabric 2. Soak the fabric in vinegar. Then you can wash it normally, although I prefer to hand wash.

  1. Sandy says:

Thank you so much Pili! I love this transfer method, since it seems so much easier than others and I have all the supplies already without having to go buy something special! I love your blog and I am a new follower. Keep up the great posts!

    • Pili says:

Thank you so much, Sandy!! I love being able to be of any help to others, as all I’ve learned has been through other bloggers. Glad to have you here, I hope to hear again from you soon, I love the feedback!

Hello Pili, so glad to find you through HomeTalk. 🙂 Love this tutorial and am now a subscriber. My plan is to pick up some acrylic spray varnish today and also to try this method on a painted tray.

    • Pili says:

Hi Christina! Glad you will be following my crazy adventures… I’ve tried this on painted wood and it doesn’t work as good as it does on fabric. In raw wood it works perfectly however. Please let me know how it came out!
      Hugs,

Hi Patti! I just saw your question at Hometalk. Yes, you need to press while the spray varnish is still wet.

    • Pili says:

Hi Minh! I’m really happy I can inspire you to do something similar. And yes, it’s plain white paper.

  7. Nikki Frank-Hamilton says:

Yeah!!! Thank you so much for the tutorial, now I know how to do it! Does natural fabric work better than poly fabric? Cotton? LOL I ask too many questions don’t I! Thanks so much for doing this.

    • Pili says:

Yes Nikki, I was thinking on you when I was doing it, now you can see it’s really easy! Cotton works great, as well as any fabric which fibers are “tight”.

  14. Jessica says:

I love how easy this is, and the possibilities are endless with what you could make using this technique. I was also going to ask about washing the fabric, too, but I see the answer.

    • Pili says:

You’re right, Jessica, the possibilities are endless!! Glad you found the answer for the washing question.
      Thanks for visiting!

  15. Lynn says:

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I’ve looked into it before but have never seen it done with Acrylic spray. I need to find some good images to transfer onto a pillow or something. Adding it to my list of ‘fun things to do’.

    • Pili says:

Hi, Lynn!! I’m sure you will enjoy making things with it.
If you need some images you can check my tab “Printables”, I have some there.
Enjoy the week ahead and thank you for stopping by!

    • Pili says:

Hi, Brenda. Yes, it is washable but I normally hand wash or run a gentle cycle. Just make sure to iron the fabric after you do the transfer to make the heat fix the image.

  16. Julie says:

Great easy way to transfer print. Will it work with a small colored picture? Have you ever tried transferring on to tiles? Thanks for sharing!

  17. Michelle says:
