How to Update Wicker Baskets in 5 Minutes

Hi, my sweet friends!

Here I am again, it is the third Thursday of the month and that means time for another Thrift Store Challenge!!  Last month I shared how to use a plastic flower box as home decor because remember, I teamed up with more than 30 bloggers to provide some inspiration with our thrift store finds that we turned into home decor pieces.

This month I am bringing you a really easy and cute project, my favorite ones! I will talk about it later but first let me remind you how this Thrift Store Challenge works.

Thrift Store Decor Upcycle Challenge

The Rules:

  • Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
  • There’s no monthly theme.
  • There’s no budget to stick to.

Some months ago I went shopping to my favorite place, a flea market. There was a lady with some wicker baskets full of junk to sell and I thought to myself that those baskets were really cute. I wondered if she might be interested in selling them as they seemed to be just to hold all the stuff she had, but I decided to ask and she said yes! The best thing about them besides their cuteness was the price… can you believe they were 3€ each one? Those things are quite expensive here so of course I took all three.

Do you remember the post title? Right, how to update wicker baskets in 5 minutes and I say it literally. The process can’t be easier, so easy that I feel a bit silly writing about it because pictures talk by themselves.

I took a star stencil I created some time ago with my Silhouette Cameo, you know I am a huge fan of stars. I did some faux stars out of cardboard here and used the same stencil for my DIY star pillow cover.

I used some tape and a newspaper to protect the basket and some chalky spray paint similar to this one in white for the star.

Ta-da!! Love the updated baskets, they cost almost nothing, I didn’t make a huge mess and it was really fast, what else can I ask for?

Don’t you love the stars too?

I would have loved to keep them but they went to the apartment I was decorating.

Here’s one of them, you will find it in the post about how to get a bright look in your bedroom. The apartment was tiny but it looks totally different now.

The smallest bedroom has its own basket too. It can hold the pillows when going to bed and it looks lovely too.

Hope you enjoyed this little makeover and have been able to inspire you to transform little flea market finds.

That looks so adorable Pili. The stars add just the right touch and make the baskets looks special, like someone went the extra mile to add a personal touch. The whole apartment turned out beautifully. I love you to help us decorate our little house by the sea. Wanna come to South Africa for a few weeks?

To think that I almost got rid of my baskets because they were too “blah” ! I love this idea and this will be my project this weekend . I love the stars on the baskets ! Thank you for this great idea. Can’t wait to do it !

      Hi Kathleen!
Sometimes a little DIY can change an entire object. If you have baskets from different sizes you can make also different stencils to fit them.
I’d love to see yours too

I remember when you did this with the pillows last year. I really like the star motif and I think it is a great way to give a fun element to anything especially these boring baskets. Great job Pili!

These are super cute Pili, and I love how simple they are to make. I also love the white on the wicker background, it looks summerly and so nice!!!
