Industrial Style Wood Crate Made With New Pine Wood

Hi, my sweet friends!

Welcome to another month of our Int’l Bloggers Club Challenge! This is one of my favorite posts because as you may know, a group of bloggers around the world are sharing their crafts, traditions and how’s life in different parts of the planet. Last month we talked about Valentine’s Day crafts, and today we will share about Spring / Fall. Four of us live in the Northen Hemisphere so  we look forward Spring, but Michelle lives in the Southern Hemisphere and Fall in knocking her door.

This has been a loooong winter, too long for my taste. We use to have a mild climate and not too low temperatures, but this year we even had snow! We also had plenty of windy days, and if this wasn’t enough, we had lots of rainy days. There were parts of the island that were flooded, kids couldn’t attend school, flights were delayed or canceled, a total mess because we are not prepared for that kind of weather.

It wouldn’t have been so tragic if I had inside the home a place to work with my table saw, like a garage or somewhere sawdust wouldn’t create a giant mess but I don’t have it, I need to move my table saw from the craft room to the terrace to work there…

So imagine my excitement when we had three warm and sunny days in a row! Ceres is happy (you can read about that mythology post here) and so do I. That meant woodworking projects, yay!

My daughter asked me a long time ago for a crate to keep all her stuff, so it was the first thing I was going to do.

I had some scrap pine wood from my Ikea Lack table makeover but I bought some more wood because I wanted to make two crates, one for my oldest daughter and the other for the youngest.

This is what you’ll need in case you plan to make one an industrial style wood crate

Here you will find the links to what I used so it will be easier for you in case you want to make your own version. There are affiliate links for your convenience, you can check my disclosure.

· Wood
· Milk Paint
· Stencil
· Screws
· Drill/Driver
· Brush
· Varnish
· Caster Wheels

I cut all the wood home with my table saw, but you can ask the store to cut it for you. I started with this simple pine wood.

I predrilled the holes and then screw everything in place.

I wanted the wood to have a dark color, that way it would contrast with the white finish I was going to give it. For that, I took some “Driftwood” color from the Old Fashioned Milk Paint and made a stain. You can achieve this by mixing the powder with more water than usual. Remember, the same amount of powder and water makes paint, and more water than powder makes a stain.

See how it changes the color? But being a “wash” instead of paint it still shows the grain.

You can compare better here the two crates.

I took some white acrylic paint for the dry brush technique. It means that you dip your brush a bit in paint and then download it as much as you can on a separate piece of wood or paper.

Download it until the brush is almost dry.

It was time to add some wheels and stencils. I used this Andy Skinner stencil with black paint for the letters.

It has that industrial look I like so much.

She is more than happy with her new crate, and I’m happy not having toys scattered on the floor.

I like how it turned out!

If your kid doesn’t like to put stuff away, try making one

And I wanted to have one for so long that I kept the other for my throws and pillows, love how it looks!

I hope you like it as much as I do, and would love to see yours if you decide to give it a try!

The crates look stunning Pili. I love, love, love the stain and dry brush effect. It makes them look so authentic with those stencils. Great storage idea and the girls must be super impressed with their mom. I hope Spring brings you many more warm days where you can be outside creating awesome things.

    • Pili says:

Thank so much Michelle. I was surprised with the stain and how cool the dry brush looks over it. I plan to build some more, fingers crossed we keep the good weather

Pili this is a great springtime craft. I know that I will be in the mood to declutter soon and by next month we usually remove the heavy winter rugs. A beautiful and fun crate for your girl to store all of her things and keep momma happy!

  3. Katrin says:

Oh I love this crate Pili!! How cool that you made it yourself! It looks great and is perfect for toy storage. I can’t wait for the warmer weather, spring is my favourite time in Spain, not too hot and not cold either!!

    • Pili says:

Thanks so much Katrin, it is nice to declutter and make something useful at the same time. Spring is the best season there in the south, that’s true

  4. Keri says:

Pili, this is a wonderful crate! I love the stencils. You did a great job building this. It will be something that is sturdy and timeless as your daughters grow. I hope the weather is nice again for more outdoor craft time. 😉

    • Pili says:

Hey Keri, thanks so much. When I was stenciling it I was thinking about you… what a shame we don’t live closer, imagine the fun we could have together

    • Pili says:

I think the same, I was tempted to steal it but then I decided I was going to build one for me too. It only needs stenciling it now
