Kids Friendly Shoe Rack

We’ve had a shoe rack at home for years and I like it so much because it’s very practical, we can extend it for more capacity or shorten it for smaller spaces.

It used to look like this

But when we decided to move our master bedroom to another room we didn’t need it anymore, so I thought it would be great for my daughters’ shoes. They were really happy and organized their shoes there. They fit wonderfully, two perfect rows of little shoes! We closed the doors and we heard a noise, so we opened the doors again. Two shoes from the upper row had fallen… ok, we arranged them again and closed the doors. No noise.

At night they opened one drawer to take their pyjamas and two shoes fell off, and two more when they closed the drawer. Oooops. Maybe the idea of the shoe rack wasn’t as good as I had thought, because their shoes were flat, no heels, and short, so they didn’t had anything that prevent them from falling all the time. Ok, one more try, I reversed the shoes with the tip pointing up with the hope that the gravity or some magic make them stand on place. I closed the doors carefully. No noise.

The next day I didn’t remember about shoes, racks or anything, the girls were playing with some friends in her room having a lot of fun, and when their friends went home it was time to tidy up a bit. I opened the dresser and surprise… no shoes were ON the rack.

I had no idea on what to do, and we spend some days just moving shoes around until I had that bulb light moment. I was going to tie some twine to make a net and then the shoes wouldn’t fell off, isn’t it smart?Shoe rack | Storage solution with twine | Via www.sweethings.net

Now the shoes stand up nicely.

There’s no room left for the shoes to fall 🙂

We’re all so glad we found a solution for the falling shoes!

The girls open and close happily their drawers without the fear of making a mess with the shoes. And if you are always looking for ways to reduce the mess kids can make sometimes, you can have a look at our repurposed tray

Pili

Very smart! I really don’t like having shoes all over the place. We take them off when we come in the house, so I have a shoe storage right at the entrance. But it doesn’t hold all of our shoes and there is no room to put up another one. I could get one of these and put them in my girls closets just like you did Pili! Such a smart idea to use the strings to keep them from falling off!

Hi, Katrin! I bought ours at Lidl years ago, it’s so practical and cheap! We have a big shoe cabinet in the foyer but that’s only for my husband and me so the little one is perfect for the girls

Gotta love Lidl as well 😉 ! They have great stuff, I get lots of german goodies there, so I like going. Again, this idea is fabulous, thanks for sharing it at Share it Link Party this week!!!

This is a fantastic solution to a common problem. Pili you are so funny with the uncooprative shoes! Aww and hey are such cute little shoes and I love the colors. My how fast little girls can grow. Mine now wear black boots – no cutsie shoes for them!

    Hi Pili,
I love this idea too as I have the same rack in my mud room and our shoes fall through all the time. It is so frustrating and this is great. Thanks for sharing this at Cooking and Crafting with J & J.

What adorable little shoes your girls have! I love shoe racks, but never seem to have the space for them 🙁

I only have one kid and she has about 3 pairs of shoes. Maybe I’m the only one that thinks it’s excessive for a growing kid to have more than a few? But you have more than one from what I read, so this looks like a good solution! Thanks for sharing!

Hi, Chantal! I don’t think you’re the only one who thinks that, I don’t have too many shoes in fact… but my daughters are free spirits and jump, climb trees and lots of other active things so shoes don’t last too long. They have provisions for a whole season! Thanks for stopping by!

Pili, what a great idea! I bet the girls love it! Their shoes are so adorable they are decoration as well as visible for ease of use. And I’m sure they are now more willing to put their shoes away than let them lay all over the house for mom to pick up! LOL

    • Pili says:

Yes, they have adorable shoes but they are barefoot most of the time! No matter it’s summer or winter, no socks, no slippers, no shoes lol. But yes, they are more willing now to put them away once they reach home.

Great idea. Most shoe racks are designed for adult shoes so the little ones fall through. Very inventive way of solving that problem.

    Your drawers are cute too!

Even adult shoes fall from that rack! But no more complaining now, solved!
I did that to the drawers to help my little daughter know where to put away her clothes, underwear on 1, shirts on 2 and so on
