A Metallic Console Gets a Makeover

Hi, friends!

I can feel Spring is coming our way; we are having sunny and warm days finally as we are not used to the cold we are having this winter. Everywhere I go I hear people commenting they are done with Winter and all of them look forward to Spring. I feel the same way!

Maybe because of these sunny days I managed to get out of this hibernating state I’ve been submerged and looked around my house for things to do. Declutter! That was my first thought and decided to start decluttering furniture.

We had this metallic console that used to be from my mother in law and that we brought home when we helped her to empty her apartment in Barcelona and move to Mallorca. We brought some other treasures like these picture frames.

Not too bad for the 80’s but first, it didn’t fit with my decor and second, we didn’t have room for it.

My sister in law had always wanted that console but again, it wouldn’t fit with her decor so I thought I could make it pretty again and give it to her.

The marble top wasn’t in very good condition but I didn’t want to throw it away. My motto is to work what you have on hand.

For this piece, one of my favorite paints came to the rescue. I was going to use Old Fashioned Milk Paint in Federal Blue and Pitch Black for the metallic part, and Oyster White for the marble top.

One of the good things about this paint is that it goes a long way. I used a mix of 2 tbsp of Federal Blue and 1/4 tsp of Pitch Black, and I added the same amount of water. I darkened the blue because I didn’t want it too bright for this piece as I had something in mind I wanted to try.

I gave two coats of paint to everything letting each one dry before applying the other. The finish on the white top is amazing, it looks like silk. I promise I took photos of everything: the beautiful dark blue, how the Oyster White covered that marble perfectly… but one day I realized how dangerous was the CLOUD… well, not an ordinary cloud but iCloud… I have my Mac synchronized with my iPhone and with the iPad, which is really convenient as I can download specific apps for the girls to learn and also I have access to all my photos. Then one day I was organizing my photo library and suddenly saw that some pictures disappeared. What?? I started to panic while I was wondering what was going on. Some more photos vanished… Shit! Then I saw my little girl iPad on had and a terrible thought crossed my mind. Baby, what are you doing? I asked. I’m deleting some pictures I don’t want because there are too many and I can’t find mine, she replied. Aaaaargggg!! No please, we’re sync and if you delete pictures there you are deleting them everywhere!! I won’t bother you with more details but the result is that I can’t show those specific pictures and now you know why. We’re human!

Ok, we were at the point that everything is painted and looking great. Being a metallic console I wanted to give it a metallic bronze shine and I used some Metallic Cream in Belt Buckle. This cream is amazing!! It also goes a looong way and I dipped the brush tip just a bit.

Can you see the shine?

I really love how the dark blue and the metallic cream work together giving the piece an aged look.

Here you can see the top, nothing was lost thankfully! It’s really smooth even without sanding it.

I took some pictures before bringing it to my sister in law.

I had told her I had something for her, and when she saw me at her door with that console she couldn’t believe it. She liked it so much that she moved a console she had on her hallway and placed this instead.

She later phoned me to tell me that when my mother in law saw it she couldn’t believe it was the same she used to have. She thought I had replaced the top.

I like how it changes when the light changes.

I hope that if you have any metallic furniture you can be inspired and not afraid to paint it, it is a great way to update it. Remember, if you like it you can Pin It for later.

I can’t believe it’s the same piece either Pili, WOW It turned out gorgeous. That color is stunning. I’m so sorry you lost some of the photos of the work in progress, but it will be a lovely story to tell your grand children one day, when they accidentally do something. I can just hear you;”Do you now what mommy did when she was small? Come little one let me tell you all about it ;-)”

    • Pili says:

Thanks so much Michelle. I don’t usually paint furniture in those colors but this time it seems the console was asking for some strong color to make it pretty again. I am sure it won’t be last one I do

Pili your sister in law must love you! I wish you were my sister in law! I cannot believe that milk paint did all that. I had no idea you could use it on metal and marble. What a beautiful transformation. The story with your kids happens all the time. I had to get my own hard disk just to keep things separate.

Awww, I wish we were sisters in law, or at least we lived closer. You’ll love that paint, it may be a bit tricky at first but then is pure love

You win the award for the best sister in law ever Pili! That console is gorgeous now! I love that colour and what you did to the top, it’s really cool! Shame you lost the photos, little hands and I pads, lol!!! I have a pair or two around here too, hehe…

    • Pili says:

In fact my sister in law deserves the award, she is a wonderful person. Be careful with those hands too lol

What a wonderful makeover, I also had no idea Milk Paint was so versatile, adhearing to not only metal but stone too? Well that’s just a game changer for sure! I’m going to have to go grab some tiles and experiment!

I have so much fun playing with different things… sometimes they work sometimes don’t. I am happy this turned out as I expected. Now I have some other ideas on mind

    • Pili says:

I had no idea but you won’t know unless you try. I’m glad it worked! My sister in law is so kind, she deserves this and much more

The metallic cream really made a big difference on the frame and legs of the table. And, I’m surprised how well the oyster white covered the marble top. This console has a lot more life left in it. Nice job!

  6. Handan says:

The color is really beautiful! Greg was looking for some blue inspiration for his project. I’ll make sure he sees this gorgeous makeover 😉

    • Pili says:

It is even more beautiful when you see it in real life. I’m sure Greg will not be disappointed with the color.
