Pictures Out Of Scrap Wood

Hi, everyone!!

You know my passion for hunting junk and treasures, so what would you think if I tell you I found an endless supply of scrap wood? Yay!! One day I was driving to buy some batting and foam to upholster my stool, and I changed the route to get there. Getting bored of always taking the same road to go to certain places is not new for me, you can read another story about it here and how I ended up finding something unexpected on my way…

Well, back to the day I needed to buy my supplies. While I was driving an explorer feeling took charge of me and I thought I could be smart enough to find the industrial warehouse even if I changed the route, so there I went. On my defense I have to say it was not a mall, it was a huge industrial estate! After having seen the same shops three times, I admitted to myself I was lost. Even the girls told me: “mom, I think we have seen this before”… Okay, no worries, it couldn’t be so difficult to get out as it was really simple to get in.

I decided to follow only the big avenues so they would lead me probably to the highway or somewhere I could recognize, and suddenly I saw it. It was like a vision! A big dumpster loaded with wood! It was outside a carpentry and they threw there all their wood scraps. Thankfully my boot was empty so I loaded it with lots of different sizes and perfectly cut wood scraps.

As always, I was so excited about it I didn’t remember taking pictures of that moment, but the small ones looked like this.

Scrap wood to be used as a picture

When I finished I got into the car, took a piece of paper and draw a map to be able to find it again! I’ve visited frequently my favorite wood “shop”, and I’ve made several things with them.

The first thing I did were these three pictures for my updated hallway. I love how they look on that long wall, and the process can’t be simpler.

I took some plywood I had at home and cut it to the size of a plain sheet of paper. Then I glued three pretty prints I had and varnished them. If you want you can have a look at the decoupage technique I used.

Finally, I glued the plywood to the piece of scrap wood, added an eyelet screw at the back and hung it, that simple!

The picture is straight but my hallway is so narrow I couldn’t take a proper picture.

I didn’t remember to take a picture the day I hung them, so I did it yesterday. And yes, as you can see my hallway needs repainting at least the four bottom lines… to much traffic there, specially kids!!

This is the kind of projects I love more, decor on a budget! Or should I say decor for free?

Maybe you want to check some other projects for your home almost for nothing, like DIY chalk paint and forget sanding, cute flower vases or store your jewelry the easy way.

Pili all of that exploring has really paid off for you. This is fabulous that you found all this scrap wood. And the art that you made is really beautiful. You would pay a lot of money to buy this at the stores. Congrats on another project beutifully made. Oh and Ilove those walls too!!

    • Pili says:

Thanks Mary! I really believe that we do things because of a reason, although most of the time we don’t know what reason it happens. And here I think that feeling had a reason: to find the wood. I love the wall too, it was a surprise for my husband that was abroad at that time.

  2. Katrin says:

Wow, lucky you to find those pieces of wood!!! I wish that would happen to me!!! It looks really classy and so nice with that striped wall as a background!!! Great idea!

    • Pili says:

I know, it seems as if I attract junk! Maybe I could use that for attracting a bigger house!
The best thing about the pictures is that I can change the prints when I get tired of them.

  3. Keri says:

Pili, ooh. I love these pictures!!! You did an awesome job and nobody would ever know they were made from scrap wood!! Your pictures look so elegant and professional!!! I think I need to visit, and go dumpster diving with you!! 😉

    • Pili says:

Thanks, Keri!! It would be awesome to meet and go dumpster diving! Can you imagine the things we could make with our treasures?
Now, only the people who read my blog know where these pictures came from 😉

Wow, what a awesome resource find. And to make such beautiful home décor with what would have been just landfill is pure genius. I want to go and make some fab wall decor now – perhaps I better paint my walls first.

    • Pili says:

Paiting the walls is a pain, I know, specially areas with furniture. I think about it, and think again, and again… and sometimes I paint them and sometimes I just wash them ahem… I dream of impollute walls but I think they’ll have to wait until the kids grow

    • Pili says:

It gives a great impact when entering the house, and I thought the big pictures would be a great addition

      Thanks for visiting!

    • Pili says:

Hi, Kelly!! Thank you so much! I love my wall too, though it needs some repainting now… I will have a look if I still have some paint and tell you the reference, but I bought it in a local shop here in Spain and I don’t know I you will find the same where you live

    • Pili says:

I love projects that cost almost nothing and look good at the same time!

Thank you so much for visiting, Joan! Welcome to my little crazy corner! 🙂

    • Pili says:

Hi, Marie!! I really love doing things that cost almost anything and looks like they could have been bought on a shop.

Thank you so much for visiting, I love what you do!

These turned out really pretty! Love the pictures that you decoupaged on the wood. I use to go dumpster diving at a cabinet shop years ago. My girls would get so embarrassed, even though it was hidden and no one could see me. I would come out with some great pieces for free. About two years ago I decided to go back and see if the cabinet shop was still there, it was but they had a fence around the property now.

    • Pili says:

I know that feeling, at first I was like your daughters but then someday I changed my mind. I just think about the precious things I am bringing home and almost wave to the cars passing by me. It is amazing the amount of things people get rid off and can be up cycled!!

  7. Rebecca says:

What wonderful, elegant pictures, and made so simply. I’m pinning because it’s such a great idea. And I’m really jealous of your carpentry shop dumpster find!

    • Pili says:

Hi, Rebecca! Yes, there is no need in spending lots of money to dress out homes. Glad you like them too!

First off, finding free wood is like winning the lottery for someone like you! Seriously love this wall and the art that you made for it. The colors and the stripes are so my style, and you could make any type of art piece!!! Great job once again Pili!!!

    • Pili says:

Not a lot of people understand the joy I feel when I find free stuff, but I know you understand me!!
The wall makes an impact when you get into the house, and I love the pictures on it.

Hi, Marci!! These pictures are so simple to make, and the best is you can use any picture or change it when you are tired of it.
