Textured and Weathered Beach Sign on a Budget

Hi, guys!

Welcome to another month of Int’l Bloggers Club Challenge!! Asking yourself what is this about? A group of bloggers around the world teamed together to share our crafts, traditions and how’s life in different parts of the planet. Last month we decided to take a huge challenge and did a post on how to styling flat lay photographs and boy, you may have no idea what it is about but it was a fun one.

This month we thought it would be great to share something to do with wood, so here we come!

Raise your hand if you have scrap wood laying around your house too. Good! Now I feel better because I take home every single piece of wood I find curbside, or in this case my hubby brought me something.

Like this.

It was part of a destroyed Ikea table my sweet husband brought one day, if you want to read the story you will find it in this post of Christmas decor with scrap wood.

Well, it had stickers on it and you know Ikea furniture is not known by having the best quality wood, so the white spots were where the particle wood was damaged by water and it had a bit of mold.

But I was not going to spend any time sanding or trying to fix it, so I just flip it, and I had this.

It wasn’t super great either but not as bad as the other side. I used some sand paper to smooth the holes and bumps.

Easy peasy.

Then I took my homemade chalk paint and added a bit of green. You will find some affiliate links for your convenience and you can read the full disclosure here.

I wanted a teal color so I mixed blue and a pinch of black.

Once I had the color I wanted, I added some Saltwash which create an amazing texture. It is an additive you add to your first layer of paint and it will give a coastal and weathered look to the piece. It doesn’t modify the color.

The fun thing with it is that you don’t brush it normally as if you paint, but apply like in a glob like technique, leaving some peaks.

Here’s a close up

Once the first layer was dry, I chose another color for the top, painted the whole thing and let it dry again.

Then I just sanded everything and both colors appeared as well as it showed a nice texture, it seemed the wood had been exposed to the weather for quite a long time.

It was time to add the letters, so I took my letter stencils from DecoArt and painted the words Beach House in white.

The last thing was to hang it on our pergola and enjoy it all summer long!

Isn’t it perfect for a beach house?

So don’t be afraid to try your own, you can turn any useless piece of wood into a wall art for your home.

OooooEeeeee Pili your sign would loook so awesome at our little house by the sea. I must really see if there’s a Saltwash stockist that will ship to South Africa. That texture is so cool

Pili I cannot believe it is the same piece of wood. It looks fantastic now. So pretty and weathered, and it goes without saying that the color is beach perfect. You have a good husband Pili.

The piece of wood looked really beat up! Now it´s beautiful and just perfect for a patio and the colour too of course. Gotta love beach signs, even in October when it’s still hot enough to go to the beach, lol!
