The Picture That Wanted To See Joy

I know, I know, reading the title you are going to say that I have some kind of fixing with pictures. Any picture that falls into my hands is going to suffer any kind of transformation, and you’re right. In my defense, I have to say that only ugly or old fashioned pictures are prone to this.

In this case, a friend of mine who is a wedding planner asked me something; he wanted a blackboard to write love quotes, the name of the couple, the menu… whatever he wanted. I thought that instead of a plain chalkboard a framed one would be awesome for a wedding but I didn’t had any as big as he wanted. Well, then any picture with a beautiful frame would do the trick so I started my tour to the thrift stores I know… and I found it!

The frame was great and the size was what he asked for. The painting wasn’t original, it just was a piece of paper behind the glass.

The process? Absolutely simple. I took some of my beloved DIY chalk paint (no, it doesn’t sleep with my husband and me, I have life besides upcycling things) and painted the whole thing white. While it dried, I have a problem with waiting you may have read about it here, I prepared some black chalk paint.

I gave the frame (only the frame) another layer of white paint and let it dry again for some hours. Then I taped the frame next to the glass and painted the glass black, two coats waiting for the previous one to dry before applying the other.

I removed the tape, varnished the frame only and it was done, ready to see the joy of weddings week after week!

Pili, love the frame and your idea for the wedding planner. It is going to look fabulous! I recently also acquired 2 large framed prints which I am going to update. Couldn’t let them go to the landfill could I? If I get round to doing something soon I will post the results before and after. TFS 🙂

You’re right Moira, you couldn’t have let them go to the landfill. I’m convinced you’ll do a great job!

Hahaha Mary, I can tell you I don’t! I didn’t dare to say horrid, but it describes the picture much better.

I’m the same way with old pictures. They are easy to find and fun to transform 🙂 Thank you for sharing with us at Snickerdoodle Sunday!

Isn’t it great that we can recycle so much? And at the same time make things pretty for our homes.
    Thanks for visiting, Laurie!

Your chalkboard turned out so pretty! Love that frame! I am always on the lookout for frames when I go to Goodwill or yard sales, I love repurposing things as well. I have made a few chalkboards from frames but never thought of painting the glass. I usually add a piece of wood in the frame and paint it, next time I’ll try painting the glass. Thanks for sharing your pretty chalkboard frame.

That looks incredible and it’s so lovely that you’ve breathed new life into an unloved picture and now it’s going to be a part of someone’s special day. It’s a rags to riches story 🙂

I love this idea. I would never have thought of it, but I read this the other day and then went to a Thrift store. They didn’t have any large frames, but I’m going to keep looking. I love this idea and they would make great gifts. Can you ever have too many chalkboards? I think not!!!

    • Pili says:

Hi, Nikki!! No, you can ever have too many chalkboards. We have three, one of them is about 120 x 150 cm! I’ll write a post about it and what it is hiding behind 😉

It’s funny you should post this, this week. I’ve been wanting a whiteboard for my desk, for reminders and to do lists, but after reading this, I think I might go down the chalkboard route. Maybe I’ll have to make a visit to a charity shop and see if I can find a frame as nice as this. Then I’ll invest in some of your beloved chalkboard paint Pili. It looks great.

Hi, Sally!! I haven’t seen your comment, sorry. Chalkboards are nicer and funnier than whiteboards 😉
