Upcycling Baby Shoes Makes a Beautiful Gift

Hi, my sweet friends!

Welcome to another month of our Int’l Bloggers Club Challenge! In fact, we are celebrating one year with this challenge! We started these series with Valentine’s Day too and we shared our traditions. Today we’ll show you some crafts or decor because remember, we are in different parts of the world and that means there are different approaches to what Valentine’s Day may represent for us.

If you want to see our last 2016 challenge it was a “Gift Swap” and how to make a chalkboard from a mirror.

Without much ado, welcome to our

Int’l Bloggers Club Valentine’s Day Craft Challenge

When thinking about Valentine’s Day we tend to believe it’s the day to show our love to our husband or wife by giving the other some presents. I don’t totally agree with that concept because love has to be shown all year long and not only on a specific day. But if I see it as an additional day to show my love then I’m ok… Yes, you can say I’m a bit weird. Then if it’s a love day the presents can be also for any other person like a parent, child, friend…

It happened that my mom gave me some time ago two pairs of baby shoes that were mine. Aren’t they simply adorable?

She said that I could keep them because she had them in a box for the fear of loosing them or that they could get damaged. I kept them in the same box until recently, when I came across them and had that bulb light moment. I was going to display them! The first thing I did was washing them and adding some fabric stiffener to help them hold the shape.

I picked this frame from my stash… I have a big collection thanks to my free my finds, gifts and mother in law’s old apartment. From hers I did these “All You Need Is Love” pictures.

This is what you’ll need in case you plan to make one similar for you

Here you will find the links to what I used so it will be easier for you in case you want to make your own version. There are affiliate links for your convenience, you can check my disclosure.

· Picture frame
· Paint
· Stencil
· Glue gun
· Glue stick
· Scalloped scissors
· Fabric stiffener

The frame was metallic and I planned to paint the wooden back as well, so I took my DecoArt paint to the rescue. I choose the color “Timeless” because it would fit with the colors of the shoes too.

To give the back some interest I used a DecoArt stencil called “Distressed Harlequin

I taped it in place and used a brush to paint. The best tip when using stencils is that less is more. I mean, you don’t want your brush loaded with a lot of paint; instead of that, unload it in a separate piece of paper or kitchen towel.

Once everything was painted I let it dry and designed some tags to show the age I had when wearing the shoes. My daughters also lent me their scalloped scissors 😉 I used some dark wax to age the frame.

I glued the tags to the back with some glue stick, and then put the glass and the back on the frame. It was time to hot glue the shoes on the glass and it was done.

I wore the crochet shoes when I was only four months old.

The sport shoes when I was four years old. The color fainted a bit and there are some missing parts but they are still so sweet.

I hope my mom loves it as much as I do, and I really think it is a wonderful Valentine’s gift full of memories. Now I just have my fingers crossed and pray she doesn’t see them before I can send it to her.

Aw Pili I wish I still had some of my own baby clothes or shoes! I have a Dirndl, which is the traditional german Oktoberfest dress from when I was a baby, but it´s not in good shape! Your idea of displaying them is so so sweet, I love the background too, how unique!! Happy Valentine´s Day!!

    • Pili says:

I’m so happy that my mom kept the little shoes for me. I can’t wait for her to see it! Happy Valentine’s Day for you too!

  2. Michelle says:

That’s sooooo adorable Pili. Look how tiny your feet were, OMW. So, so cute and it’s such a great idea to display them rather than having them sit in a box. Love this idea.

    • Pili says:

Thank Michelle. My daughters were so curious about the shoes too, they could believe I had tiny feet 😉

Pili thisi s such a special way to show your mother how much you love her. We should always show the ones we love just how much we love them and not wait for some special day. I don’t have anything from when I was a baby but I do have a few pictures. It was a looooong time ago. 😉

    • Pili says:

I agree Mary, especially as my dad passed away and I don’t have siblings, she’s the only I have left and I love her so much.

  4. Keri says:

Pili, this is the sweetest Valentine’s Day gift!!! Oh my your mom is going to love this and probably cry when she sees it, I know I would. 🙂 How thoughtful!! It looks beautiful!! You did a wonderful job on this!

    • Pili says:

I am sure it will be a special gift for her. We can’t see each other as much as we would like so I hope this way she feels us more close.

Very sweet idea! Years ago I took my son’s little cowboy boots and planted them with flowers to leave outside our front door. That was popular to do back in the mid-90’s. Thanks for a fun blogpost!

Pili, I couldn’t agree with you more about Valentine’s Day. It’s like you took the words right out of my mouth! LOVE your baby shoe art and going to share your post with my daughter. This idea would be perfect for my grandson’s room, especially considering he wore the same shoes his Daddy wore when he was just starting to walk.

    • Pili says:

Aww Marie, keeping the shoes from dad to son is simply lovely. I am sure it will be a great memory for him when he gets older. Those are the most precious treasures.

    • Pili says:

I agree Jodie, there’s no point in keeping something if you only see it before/after a move At least that’s what happens if I keep things in a box.

  7. Barbara Chapman ~ says:

Such a cute project, Pili! I’m unsure whether I have met you before pero creo que sí! Puedo hablar en Español pero quizas es mejor que recibo su letras en Inglés. 🙂

I am just seeing your post today as Mary of The Boondocks Blog put it up on her cute Mother’s Day ideas post. Qué bueno! 😀

    Tenga un buen día,
    Barb 🙂

    • Pili says:

Hi Barbara!! Tu español es muy bueno!! I like when others communicate in a different language than their own, I also express myself way better in Spanish lol.

Thanks so much for stopping by and for your kind comment.

      Have a wonderful day 🙂
